Our Accounting and Finance teams play an important role in keeping Gordon Food Service operating effectively and efficiently. From strategic work in the development of annual and long-range operating plans to establishing infrastructure that keeps financial transactions flowing efficiently (our employees and vendors like that!), to credit operations that recognize the unique positions of our customers large and small.....we are reliant on this group of professionals and the work they do each week, each month, each quarter.  

Position Summary:

Plans and manages accounting activities within Business Unit Finance.  Leads, develops, interprets and implements complex financial and accounting concepts or techniques for financial planning and control.  Ensures that generally accepted accounting principles are followed.  Oversees the timely and accurate completion of period end closings and financial reporting.  Supports the Annual Operating Plan (AOP) and Long Range Plan (LRP), as well as month-end close expense analysis for division operating departments within the Canadian business unit.  Key responsibilities include establishing best practices, setting targets, managing the close calendar, guidelines and assumptions, and the coordination of activities for the business unit related to the financial segments of AOP and LRP.


Essential Functions:

  • Applies and monitors compliance with corporate financial policies, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and accounting standards for private entities (ASPE).
  • Leads the development and implementation of goals, policies, priorities and procedures relating to financial management, budgeting and accounting.
  • Leads and facilitates the performance assessment strategy which includes developing and implementing the appropriate metrics, benchmarks, and reporting necessary to evaluate company performance on an enterprise wide basis.
  • Participates in month-end closing cycle and financial statement preparation.
  • Reviews financial results with senior leadership through Canadian Direct Operating Earnings.
  • Responds to questions from key stakeholders about P&L trends and deviations from AOP.
  • Supports the organization’s strategic planning initiatives.
  • Conducts corporate benchmark reporting to compare GFS divisional operations.
  • Provides interpretation of financial policies, governmental legislation, accounting theory, and customer financial regulations.
  • Determines proper handling of financial transactions and approves transactions within designated limits.
  • Reviews, investigates, documents, and coordinates implementation of accounting systems and internal control procedures.
  • Participates in process and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Interviews, hires, train, and retain staff.  Conducts performance monitoring of staff, initiating follow through with disciplinary action and termination in consultation with Human Resources when appropriate for the department.  Mentors, motivates, and develops staff and acts as a role model and resource to them
  • Collaborate with Business Unit Controller, Grand Rapids Financial reporting, North American Financial Planning and Analysis and divisional financial analysts / cost accountants on accounting related matters.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



  • Must have knowledge of general ledger  accounting, financial analysis, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP),  accounting standards for private enterprise (ASPE), and internal control analysis and implementation.  Must know advanced principles of analysis, reporting, and information valuation, must understand process improvement strategies, and be technologically adaptable.
  • Experience manipulating large amounts of data.

  • Advanced proficiency with Excel (pivots, macro’s, lookup’s)

  • High attention to detail and integrity of data.
  • Able to adapt to various forms of technology.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting is required
  • Eight to ten years accounting experience with two years prior supervisory experience required, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration is preferred
  • Certified Public Accountant or Certified Managerial Accountant is preferred
